In Mongolia, shifting climate patterns are rewriting the rules of nomadic life. Dry summers followed by harsh winters create a phenomenon known as dzud, leaving grazing herds to starve. A single winter can kill millions of livestock. A threat that used to come once a decade now comes almost every year.

We follow a nomadic family in the mountains of western Mongolia across multiple seasons, to film what this does to a life built entirely on livestock.

Bayan-Ölgii, the westernmost province of Mongolia, at the foot of the Altai mountains. The majority of the people here are ethnic Kazakh, with their own language and traditions.

The family we follow lives west of the village of Tsengel: summers in a yurt, the colder months in a small wooden house.
